Betts' heroics not enough to lift the Red Sox over Jays

Mookie Betts became the 21st player in Boston Red Sox history to hit for the cycle with a home run in the 9th inning off Blue Jays pitcher Ken Giles on Thursday. "He'll take is walks, too".

Borucki gave up a solo home run to J.D. Martinez in the fourth, his homer less streak coming to an end at 47.1 innings, tied for the third longest all time by a Blue Jay to start their career. The first three hits were off Borucki, who got the win despite giving up four runs on nine hits over five innings. He walked three batters and recorded five strikeouts. "I mentioned to [Toronto pitching coach] Pete Walker on the bench that you kind of have to hope he just hits it at somebody".

Boston (81-35) opened the scoring early against Borucki, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning when third baseman Eduardo Nunez brought home Betts and Andrew Benintendi with a line drive to right field.

The Blue Jays' top lefty pitching prospect has gone on to pitch six or more innings in all but one of his seven outings since then heading into Thursday's contest, pitching to a desirable 2.30 earned-run average along the way. Grichuk hit his two-run dinger in the fifth for his 16th. Smoak singled home leadoff man Curtis Granderson, while a force out by Grichuk scored Devon Travis.

Smoak's hit extended his hitting streak to a season team-high 13 games. "The last few weeks have just felt pretty good".

Partial Solar Eclipse 2018
In 2018, the first eclipse was the super blue blood moon on January 31 followed by a partial solar eclipse on the February 15. The point at which the sun is totally blocked is called totality, and that can last from around 30 seconds to seven minutes.

Grichuk followed with an RBI fielder's choice to tie it 2-2.

Boston's Brock Holt is caught stealing second as Toronto's Aledmys Diaz stretches to make the tag in the fifth inning. Martinez now has MLB-leading 35 round-trippers.

After getting eaten alive in his first encounter against baseball's best back in July, Borucki rebounded in strong fashion on Thursday night at Rogers Centre, doing just enough to help Toronto gain at the very least a measure of respect from the runaway American League East leaders. Betts hit a single in the first inning, a triple in the second, a double in the fourth and a home run in the ninth.

"It's a good day but a tough loss", Betts said.
