It has already acquired land at Navi Mumbai, Gurugram and Bengaluru and has begun work on the Mumbai property, which is expected to be ready by summer of 2019.

What started as a trickle of shoppers at 10 a.m., when the store opened, had turned into a steady stream about an hour later. "Hence, Ikea will have to address space, pricing and design issues and pick products accordingly", Meena said.

IKEA officially opened the doors of its first India store on August 9, which saw most of Hyderabad rushing to get a feel of the home décor store.

IKEA had originally planned to open its first store in India by 2017, but it was delayed.

The Swedish embassy in India's Twitter account said it was "very proud" of the opening.

Meredith Keeler, the General Manager of the Country Club Plaza, said the decision was made after safety incidents were reported. The decision came just days after the city announced an agreement with Bird to allow them to operate no more than 500 scooters.

The opening ceremony in the city of Hyderabad on Thursday was attended by Klas Molin, the Swedish ambassador to India, and K Taraka Rama Rao, the state minister for Telangana. It is located in the midst of IT hub at walkable distance from Raheja mindspace, hi-tech city. The opening of its first store here was scheduled for July 19 this year but the company again pushed it back by nearly 20 days to August 9, citing quality commitments. However, Ikea claims it is for everyone, irrespective of size of their wallet. One finds a set of four spoons for as low as Rs 15. "Friends, families, festivals and food all happen at home", Patrik Antoni told IANS.

"We promise to give great quality at affordable prices and try to expand quickly and reach other parts of the country with multiple stores", IKEA's boss Jesper Brodin told a news conference on Wednesday.

Alongside standard IKEA furniture like Billy bookshelves and Klippan "loveseats", the chain will offer "locally relevant products" like masala boxes, Indian frying pans called tawas, rice cake makers and mattresses with a coconut-fibre centre.

"Ikea has an opportunity to pioneer modern retailing in the home improvement sector", said Ankur Bisen, head of retail and consumer division at Technopak Advisors Pvt., an Indian consulting firm based near New Delhi. It also tailored 2,000 products from its range to suit Indian needs, taking into consideration climatic realities such as dust and humidity.
