Former Tour de France victor Jan Ullrich has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a prostitute in Frankfurt, police say. She said Ullrich was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and could be charged with "assault or attempted murder".

Ullrich had allegedly called on the services of a prostitute at the five-star Villa Kennedy Hotel in Frankfurt, Bild daily reported.

"It seems Mr Ullrich and an escort woman had a dispute and that he attacked her", said police spokesperson Carina Lerch. "Mr Ullrich is still in custody".

"An investigation is underway for attempted homicide, assault and battery, possession of unsafe goods, but the prosecution does not now see any serious indication of attempted murder ... and [therefore] reason to place him in pre-trial detention", she added, although a judge will decide this question Friday.

On Monday, Ullrich had told German tabloid Bild of personal problems.

He has not seen his three children since late 2017 - their mother has had custody of them since the separation.

He competed in cycling during the controversial period dominated by drugs cheat Lance Armstrong and finished second in the Tour de France five times.

"Almost everyone took performance-enhancing substances then".

Ullrich, the only German to win the Tour de France, was dogged by doping allegations over his career and admitted to German magazine Focus in 2013 that he received blood-doping treatment from Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes. He also told me that he had a prescription for cocaine'.
