FC Barcelona have confirmed their four captains for the 2018-19 season with Leo Messi to take over the armband from Andrés Iniesta after the midfield maestro's departure for Vissel Kobe.

The Argentina global takes over from Iniesta following his move to Vissel Kobe in the J League at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

Messi, 31, joined the club in 2001 and is their record goalscorer.

Lionel Messi will wear the famous armband having been the official vice-captain since 2015.

And Barcelona announced on Friday that Messi will be the first of four captains for the new campaign, along with Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto.

The director is James Bobin , who previously worked on The Muppets movie, as well as Alice Through the Looking Glass . Interestingly enough, Michael Bay's name is not mentioned in Paramount Pictures' latest press release for the film.

Messi will be hopeful of lifting his first trophy as captain on Sunday as Ernesto Valverde's side take on Sevilla in the Spanish Supercopa.

Messi remains Barcelona's all-time top scorer and the recipient of no less than five Ballon d'Or awards during his time at the club.

Sergi Roberto captained an inexperienced Barca squad during the club's recent tour of the United States.

The midfielder, who is now 26, has been at the club since 2006 and has made over 200 first team appearances since making his debut in 2010 under Pep Guardiola.

Barcelona's decision can be attributed not only to the La Masia connection but also to time served at the club.
