Even before Mustang became a global icon, its first competition was in 1964, when it surprisingly won the Tour de France Automobile, a grueling 4,000-mile, 10-day rally. The missions that we have in motorsports at Ford Performance, first and foremost, is we need to go win races and championships that matter, and we can do that now with the Mustang in the top level of our sport. Soon after, it began a racing legacy that continues weekly in SCCA Trans-Am, IMSA, NHRA, NMRA, NMCA, Formula Drift, NASCAR Xfinity, and in the hands of many sportsman racers worldwide.

Ford Performance and the design team's goal was to build a stock auto that remains true to the road car's design but also competitive on the track. "We can't wait to see it winning races in the NASCAR Cup Series next year".

"To put the performance behind the auto is important, but also to keep the awesome styling from the street vehicle - to put that on the racetrack and keep the cars looking the same, keeping that badass look that the Mustang has, it's exciting", said Team Penske driver Joey Logano. The days of shaving off the edges in the design are gone.

Currently, there are 13 Ford drivers in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. The new race auto made it's debut at Ford's World Headquarters.

The Blue Oval on Thursday revealed the cup racer ahead of its competition debut in the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series, where it will fill the shoes of the Fusion.

"Mustang has raced since it was first sold in 1964", said Hau Thai-Tang, the Ford executive vice president of product development and purchasing. Ricky Stenhouse Jr was the series champion is 2011 and 2012. Notably, Ricky Stenhouse Jr won back-to-back driver's championships with the vehicle in 2011 and 2012.

Ford released images of its new Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series entry today and announced that its first race will be next February's Daytona 500. The 10 millionth Mustang rolled off the production line Wednesday. That vehicle was produced at the Flat Rock, Michigan assembly on Wednesday August 8, 2018. Stay tuned next week for the reveal of the 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet.
