Pakistan supports Saudi Arabia in diplomatic row with Canada

Algeria on Thursday expressed its concern about the repercussions of the crisis in relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Canada, calling for respect for the sovereignty of States and non-interference in their internal affairs.

The FO stated that Pakistan stands by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in protecting its sovereignty as a matter of principle and based on the historic and brotherly relations between our two countries.

"Algeria calls for the need for states to take into account the principles of global law and the UN Charter in their foreign relations, especially with respect to r the sovereignty of States and non-interference in their internal affairs".

Trudeau said that although his country appreciates the "importance" of Saudi Arabia in the world, it would continue to speak "clearly and firmly about human rights issues in the country and abroad" whenever needed.

Saudia Arabia and Canada have been embroiled in a diplomatic row ever since Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland posted a demand for the Saudi government to release women-rights activist Samar Badawi on social media.

Trudeau noted that Freeland had "a long conversation" on Tuesday with her counterpart Adel al-Jubeir to try to resolve the dispute.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced "the freezing of all new trade and investment dealings with Canada and retaining its right to take further action".

The Minister of Civil Service, Sulaiman Bin Abdullah Al-Hamdan, who also heads the Training and Scholarship Committee - an affiliate of his ministry, explained that the committee's secretariat has been working 24 hours a day to provide support for Saudi missions overseas to help the smooth transfer of those on scholarship in Canada to other countries and universities.

"Both sides need to diplomatically resolve this together. They need to resolve it together", US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told a briefing on Wednesday.

Trudeau stressed that they were keen to communicate directly with the Saudi government in order to re-establish diplomatic relations between the two countries, and pointed out that "the issue of Canada's apology for the criticism of human rights violations were not addressed during the talks".

The move came after Germany's foreign minister last November remarked that Lebanon was a "pawn" of Saudi Arabia after the surprise resignation of its Prime Minister Saad Hariri while in Riyadh.
