US Open champion Sloane Stephens, the third seed, beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 7-5 to book her spot in the quarter-finals, where she is to face Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova, a 6-3, 7-6 (7/2) victor over German 10th seed Julia Goerges.

World No.1 woman tennis player Simona Halep from Romania has reached the round of 16 of the Premier 5 tournament after beating Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets.

"During the 20 years of my professional career I have never used any ways to force a partner to drop out of a match", Peng, who won the women's doubles at Wimbledon in 2013 and Roland Garros in 2014, wrote on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter.

"She wasn't feeling great on the court and it definitely wasn't her best day".

The reigning French Open champion started quickly, winning the first two games en route to taking the opening set.

Williams was broken in the first game of the second set and again in the third but she refused to surrender, managing to halt Halep and generate some nerves by claiming one of the breaks back.

Garcia was a 6-3 6-2 victor over Russia's Maria Sharapova while defending champion and fifth seed Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) bundled out Briton Johanna Konta 6-3 6-4.

Halep and Garcia met in the quarter-finals of this event past year when it was held in Toronto with Halep coming out the victor 6-4, 6-2.

The Romanian will play in the next round against 13th seeded American Venus Williams, who on Thursday beat Halep's compatriot, Sorana Cirstea, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Second seed Dane Caroline Wozniacki went down in her first match, losing 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7/4) to Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.

The 20-year-old saved three match points at 3-5 in the third set - winning a backhand rally on the first, acing Wozniacki on the second, and crushing a victor that was set up by a big serve on the third. "I was like, 'C'mon, you have to be ready (because) she will be straight in the match.' I think that really helped me". "I didn't get it".

American third seed and reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 7-5 to book her spot in the quarters, where she will face Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova, a 6-3 7-6 (7-2) victor over German Julia Goerges.

Third seed Stephens, building up to the start of the defence of her maiden Grand Slam title in NY later this month, squandered three match points at 5-1 in the second set.

Cornet had entered the match confident after stunning Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber 6-4 6-1 in the second round and did exert some pressure on Barty. She finished off Belarus' Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-1, but later lost to fifth seed Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4.
