Dr Furtado is said to have carried out the procedure on Ms Calixto, a 46-year-old bank manager and mother-of-two, at his home in Rio de Janeiro last month - but she fell ill during the procedure.

His girlfriend, Renata Fernandes, had already been arrested on suspicion of taking part in the procedure.

Dozens of deaths among women in Latin America have been put down to the use of synthetic polymers such as the one Furtado is alleged to have used. He had a massive following on social media, including 645,000 followers on Instagram, where he posted photos of before and after operations.

Furtado was a celebrity who revelled in his nickname in social media posts.

The public prosecutor's office in Rio de Janeiro said the doctor "had attracted women with the false promise of quick and immediate beauty".

Furtado was on the run for four days after Lilian Calixto's death, police say, but authorities managed to arrest him for the death. They sought a judicial order to remain free while their case proceeded, but were turned down by a Rio court and later arrested.

Police said they found the surgeon, who is allegedly not registered to practice medicine in Rio de Janeiro, in the same city following a tip-off.

Furtado's mother Maria de Fatima Barros Furtado is also facing charges after she allegedly continued to practice and operate with her son after her medical license was taken away.

Calixto assured her family that she would be gone for less than a day after she had a surgery in Rio, according to local media reports summarized by The Guardian. The hospital refused to comment.

In a press conference in July in Brasília, Furtado's lawyer Naiara Baldanza said her client was innocent.

"For every truth there is a parallel truth", she said. "Many facts have surfaced and I am sure we will show the innocence of Dr Denis".

"As everyone knows, an accident happened", he said, adding a patient had left his consulting room after a treatment to her buttocks that he had performed many times.

Ms Calixto reportedly arrived at the hospital with an abnormally fast heart rate after having silicone injected into each buttock, before her death.
