While the studio is expected to use Gunn's script, it's more than likely whichever director is brought in to direct the feature will opt to tweak things to their liking, which could also halt the production schedule temporarily.

After a huge social media surge of support from Marvel fans, as well as public declarations from the full Guardians cast, it seemed Disney might change its mind.

As reported by Variety, "Gunn and his UTA reps pushed hard for him to be given a second chance, and Horn made a decision to take a courtesy meeting on Tuesday".

Per Variety, following what is described as a "courtesy" meeting between studio chairman Alan Horn and Gunn, Disney has ultimately chose to stand by Horn's initial decision and will not reinstate Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The report describes the meeting as being more of a cursory, face-to-face goodbye for Gunn, fan and cast support for whom, had kept hopes of his return alive.

Gunn has been writer and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise from the start, taking an obscure Marvel Comics title about a group of misfits and turning it into a space opera decked with comedy and retro music that made Pratt a major movie star.

One would think that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige would have been there to help make the case for James Gunn's reinstatement, but he was said to be out of town (possibly on the set of Spider-Man: Far From Home across the pond) and thus unable to attend.

However, despite their petition and open letter calling him to be brought back, talks between Disney and Gunn resulted in the decision a new director would be found.

There is some good news, however.

Original reports had claimed that Disney would drop Feige's script for Guardians 3, which was believed to be complete.
