Federer advanced to the third round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Peter Gojowczyk, and Williams was eliminated by eighth-seeded Petra Kvitova in a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 second-round loss.

After losing to Kevin Anderson in the Wimbledon quarterfinal 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 4-6, 11-13, Roger Federer will return to tennis at the Cincinnati Masters in order to test his form ahead of the upcoming US Open.

Asked what will take to her to win her 24th Grand Slam title at the upcoming US Open, Serena added: 'I think I just definitely want to get a more consistent serve, more than anything, and return more consistently.

Williams, who made the Wimbledon final last month but withdrew from last week's Rogers Cup in Montreal for personal reasons, cracked eight aces and was never broken as she dispatched the 24-year-old Australian.

The former world No 1 raced to victory in the opening round, but despite playing some of her best tennis of late she could not replicate the same result to advance to the last 16. She later clarified that she had been struggling with post-natal emotions.

"I'm still at the very beginning", said the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

"I'm just going to continue to work hard, and hopefully I'll start winning more matches". So there is only so much you can really do. "It's been good to me", Murray said. I wish I could play everything but it's not possible. "I have more time for the family, which is important for me", the father of two sets of twins said.

"I'm more relaxed about my schedule now".

A nervy start to the third set saw both players drop their serve, but Kvitova found her stride to go 4-2 up and eventually emerge the 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victor after two hours on court.

Denis Shapovalov also reached the third round with an upset, knocking off 14th-seeded Kyle Edmund, 6-4, 7-5.

Australian Open semi-finalist Hyeon Chung won the last five games to beat Jack Sock 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Ashleigh Barty stopped wild card Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 7-5.

Weekend Toronto finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas exhausted late in a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Belgian 11th seed David Goffin.

But it was not enough to cope with an in-form Kvitova, who emerged a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victor after an entertaining struggle that lasted two hours on the outdoor hard courts of the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
