Ford has announced a new Mustang Cobra Jet - not to be confused with the Mustang Super Snake - to mark the 50th anniversary of the original auto taking the drag strips of America by storm.

To make all that power, Ford increased the engine's displacement from 5.0 liters to 5.2, strengthened its internals, and dropped a Whipple supercharger into the valley.

The new limited edition Ford Performance 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet is the fastest production Mustang on the drag strip and the new model is capable of topping 150 MPH with quarter-mile runs in the mid-eight-second range. Ford also uses a Strange Engineering low-drag disc brake system, paired with a four-link rear suspension with antiroll and panhard bars. Today at Mustang Alley along the Woodward Dream Cruise, Ford Performance peeled the cover of the 50 Anniversary version that promises to be the fastest and most powerful version to date. "This has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street". Customers can order now at an MSRP of $130,000.

Scientists kill the buzz around new pesticide sulfoxaflor
A newly developed pesticide that could soon be introduced in the United Kingdom poses a serious threat to bumblebees, research suggests.

As a sort of straight-line speed counterpart to its SCCA/Trans Am-ready Shelby FP350S, Ford is celebrating the Mustang Cobra Jet's 50th birthday with 68 examples of its track-only Mustang Cobra Jet drag racer.

While the color wouldn't be the deciding factor to buy one, the latest Cobra Jets are only available in two colors - Race Red or Oxford White. Skinny tires on the front axle, a stripped interior featuring an NHRA roll cage, an FIA seat, a Sparco steering wheel, a factory-installed wheelie bar, and a carbon-fiber hood also come standard. Leaver said we can expect more info about the new Cobra Jet at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show or PRI Timing.

The car's long history of winning and setting records dates to its debut race weekend, where it commanded NHRA Super Stock at the 1968 Winternationals in Pomona, Calif. Ford has yet to reveal the newcomer's official power output. More than 150 vehicles dating back to 1968 are expected to attend.
