Putin wants Russian Federation and Japan to seal historic peace deal

"The government will continue its negotiations on the basic principle that we will sign a peace treaty after resolving the issue of the attribution of the Four Northern Islands", Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said.

"It would be naive to think that it can be solved quickly", Putin said after meeting Abe on the sidelines of the forum.

Japan and Russian Federation didn't sign a formal peace treaty after World War II.

Among other things, the duo touched on bilateral economic cooperation to boost trade volume between the two countries.

"Let's conclude a peace treaty before the end of this year, without any pre-conditions".

Vladimir Putin said Russian Federation welcomes more investment by Chinese companies and will offer good conditions to encourage more exchanges with China. He said his idea was that the two sides sign a treaty first, and then work through the issues on which they are in dispute afterwards.

The disputed Kuril Islands lie between Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula and the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two leaders had not yet discussed Putin's proposal, Interfax news agency reported.

Both Moscow and Tokyo claim sovereignty over the islands, known in Russian Federation as the Kurile islands and in Japan as the Northern Territories.

Speaking before Putin, Abe asserted that Japan and Russian Federation "have a duty to future generations" regarding the islands dispute.

Japan decided a year ago it would expand its ballistic missile defense system with US -made ground-based Aegis radar stations and interceptors.

"Shinzo said, 'Let's change our approach".

During a speech at the Easterm Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Beijing's relationship with Russia is at an "all time high" as he called for further investments in Russia.

The South Korean PM also said that President Moon proposed to try to increase the bilateral trade volume by 50 percent by 2020, which marks the 30th year anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
