Women (41%) were more likely than men (37%) to say they haven't gotten the shot and aren't planning to do so.

Most of the advisories about flu vaccines and prevention specifically mention the best time to get a flu shot.

Jill Baber is influenza surveillance coordinator with the health department.

Last year, Central Georgia was hit hard, but the agency is saying now is the time to get your flu shot before the virus starts to spread. The CDC says about 80 percent of those children did not get the vaccination.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone aged 6 months and older, as the first and most important step in self-protection against the flu. This seasonal clinic is recommended for individuals who do not have health insurance coverage, or whose insurance may not cover the flu vaccine. The vaccine will be matched to four strains this year, including H3N2 (the dominant strain last year).

Here are 10 facts and myths about the flu so that you can be fully prepared to combat it this fall. There were also 150 deaths, including five children, in Georgia.

The estimate that has been prepared by The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that in excess of 700,000 people had to get hospitalized with flu when it had struck past year with influenza or pneumonia spreading like an epidemic for a period of 16 weeks at a stretch. Patients were included if they were at least 1-year-old and had seen a doctor within seven days of the onset of flu-like symptoms. The gender-based difference in vaccine effectiveness gap was most obvious among older adults (potentially because of age-related immune system changes or immunosenescence) and prepubescent children. The WHO makes recommendations for the composition of the northern hemisphere flu vaccine every year; and this is published six months in advance to allow for vaccine production times.

While last year's flu vaccine was found to be only around 25 percent effective, this year's vaccine has been improved to "better match circulating viruses". Flu activity tends to pick up in October and November, and usually peaks between December and February. Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson, a spokeswoman for the AAP and a pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital, says that the organization is still not taking chances and all children must still get the shots with spray kept in reserve for special cases only.

Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently, but millions of people get the flu every year, hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized and thousands or tens of thousands of people die from flu-related causes every year.
