Hurricane Florence Begins Its Assault On The Carolinas

The ISS is now orbiting at an altitude of about 400 km above the surface of the Earth meaning it has an incredible view of Hurricane Florence as it rages.

"Little change in strength is expected before the center reaches the coast, with weakening expected after the center moves inland", the National Hurricane Center said.

Florence's maximum sustained winds were clocked on Thursday at 165 kph after it was downgraded to a Category 2 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, according to the NHC.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference, that a "historic storm" would unleash rains and floods that would inundate nearly the entire state.

Although the suggestive graphic was presumably an accident, it is somehow a fitting representation for a storm that has already been described as "tremendously big and tremendously wet" in a White House briefing from Donald Trump this Tuesday.

According to CNN, Florence's center will approach the coasts of North and SC late Thursday and Friday, with the actual landfall expected to come on Friday afternoon.

Because landfalling hurricanes commonly spawn twisters, a tornado watch was issued for eastern North Carolina.

The first large power outage in the Wilmington area also occurred Thursday morning, with the Duke outage map showing almost 1,400 customers in the Acme-Delco area of Columbus County and northwest Brunswick County without power. The Weather Channel reported the storm is likely to make landfall either tonight or Friday, after which it will stall over the Southeast, producing buckets of rain that could accumulate to risky amounts.

Hurricane Florence will be one of the biggest storms to make landfall along the U.S. eastern seaboard in decades. As the recovery from past storms continues in many rural towns, the next storm is about to strike.

The surge will result in "large areas of deep inundation. enhanced by battering waves", the Weather Service said.

As the storm - with those winds - nears shallow water along the coast, its forces water inland.

"Employees and local contractors have inspected equipment, reviewed procedures and assembled staffing plans to ensure around-the-clock support to respond to any potential impacts", the company said in a statement.

"It doesn't matter where you are", he said.

If the storm lingers for a few days, the sheer amount of rainfall could lead to catastrophic flooding.

Updated NHC forecasts showed the storm lingering near the coast of the Carolinas, carrying days of heavy rains that could bring intense inland flooding from SC to Virginia.

But the Miami-based NHC stressed it remained "a life-threatening situation" due to the risks of storm surge around coastal areas. The surge won't be as bad as it potentially could have been, however, and the winds won't be as strong.

"They try to stay open as long as they can", Kourounis said.

"We are extremely concerned with the streams and rivers at full capacity", Ringgold said.
