Jose Mourinho has launched a remarkable defence of the way he uses Marcus Rashford, reeling off a list of statistics as the Manchester United manager lashed out at "obsessed" pundits.

Rashford has managed double digits in goals the past two seasons, while Ronaldo first achieved that feat in 2005-06, as he turned 21.

Thompson thinks Rashford will have to make a big decision about his future next summer if his lack of action continues at Old Trafford.

"He's got huge competition for places at his club so you can understand that", Southgate said. He's a huge admirer of him, but he has got his job to do.

Daily Telegraph columnist Jamie Carragher made the point that Rashford has the most hard of tasks at United - a young player coming through as a striker at a big club.

Gareth Southgate has warned his England players that it will be hard to pick them for next month's Nations League games in Croatia and Spain if they are not playing regularly for their clubs.

"They understand it is hard to pick players if we are seven, eight weeks into the season and they are not playing", Southgate said. They have to try to win matches.

"He is not going to give up trying to prove himself at United but he knows he may have a big decision to make soon". "Is he going to fit in at Manchester United?". They have to rotate their squads.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported that Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is reportedly wanted by Premier League top clubs Everton and Chelsea.

"So I can expect that Sunday some of them will wake up in the morning and the first thing they think of is Jose Mourinho, so I can imagine on Sunday I am going to be criticised for not playing Marcus but it's not my fault, he's suspended, so probably you should remind them he is suspended and cannot play".

He added: "In 2016-17, Marcus Rashford played 32 Premier League matches, 11 Europa League matches, including the final, three FA Cup matches, six League Cup matches, including the final, and the Community Shield".

"He would have been a bit disappointed about the amount of time he had at the World Cup but it was important to get him in the penalty box and remembering the areas where he needs to be scoring goals".

Southgate also insists the 20-year-old is further down the line in development terms than fellow striker Kane, who was farmed out on loan four times by Tottenham as a youngster before making the breakthrough at age 21.
