Incredibly enough, he denied that almost 3,000 people had died. But Trump, whose efforts to help the island territory recover have been persistently criticized, was having none of that.

If the new figures are accurate, Hurricane Maria is the deadliest storm to have hit Puerto Rico since the 1899 San Ciriaco hurricane.

Colbert claimed that bad news of the GW study was pushed off the front pages by other Trump bad news. He falsely claimed the number had been inflated by Democrats "in order to make me look as bad as possible". "So I have no reason to dispute those numbers".

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora wasn't a big fan of President Donald Trump's comments Thursday about Puerto Rico.

But in late April, the local Puerto Rican General Services Administration requested the water bottles from FEMA and began giving them out in May.

"He's talking about the one a year ago, because he's been tweeting a lot about what a great job he did responding to Hurricane Maria, that decimated Puerto Rico last year", Colbert said. "The loss of any life is tragic".

"Incredibly disheartening comments from our President", Bush tweeted Thursday.

George Washington University found thousands more people died on the island after Maria than deaths in previous years. "Direct" deaths include such fatalities as drownings in a storm surge or being crushed in a wind-toppled building. That is only an estimate, however, since they did not study how each individual died, although they hope to conduct that study in the future. "When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths", he tweeted.

The George Washington University study, requested by the governor of Puerto Rico, examined an unusually long period of time following the storm in an attempt to detect the hurricane's lingering, indirect effects on mortality. We are committed to the health of the population.

The elderly and impoverished were hardest hit by the hurricane. Still, Trump was unwilling to admit that more needed to be done by the federal government. It's time to declare the White House a disaster area and take the appropriate constitutional measures to rescue the republic from Trump's flagrant mismanagement and appalling misconduct.

Republican response was largely muted. It made landfall on Puerto Rico on September 20, battering the island with winds of up to 155 miles per hour, ripping buildings apart and uprooting trees. At the time, the government's death toll stood at 64.

Trump bristled at criticism of his administration's handling of the Puerto Rico disaster as Hurricane Florence approached the coast of North Carolina with heavy rains that forecasters warned would cause catastrophic flooding across a wide swath of the US southeast.

The mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico's capital, slammed Trump for the comments nearly immediately.
