Trump ex-campaign head Manafort to cooperate in Russian Federation probe

At the time of Gates' plea, Manafort issued a statement saying he "had hoped and expected my business colleague would have had the strength to continue the battle to prove our innocence".

Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Friday finally squeezed all the resistance out of Paul Manafort.

Paul Manafort's plea deal may affect Vice President Mike Pence because of the former campaign chairman's role in making him Donald Trump's running mate.

One of the potential witnesses against Manafort was Sam Patten, who pleaded guilty on August 31 to failing to register as a Ukrainian agent.

According to the court filing, the charge of conspiracy against the United States includes money laundering, tax fraud, failing to disclose foreign bank accounts, and acting as an unregistered lobbyist for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine.

Manafort was convicted last month of eight financial crimes in a separate trial in Virginia. And the judge may decide to run those sentences consecutively or concurrently. But that is more than the statutory maximum which is five years, which the judge can not exceed. The allegations revealed last October reiterated a year of news reports that Manafort had secretly funneled income from Ukrainian lobbying contacts for years.

The forfeitures are part of an agreement to plea guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice by witness tampering.

There's been plenty of speculation that Manafort could be rescued by a presidential pardon.

On the other hand, if he cooperates "fully and truthfully" with Mueller but does not implicate the President, he will nearly surely receive a presidential pardon. Just ask Ivan Boesky, Jeffrey Skilling, Martha Stewart and a host of other multimillionaires who were marched to prison in handcuffs after facing off against federal prosecutors.

"I do", he said repeatedly, waiving each right. Five other charges were dropped in the new court filing. Addressing reporters outside the courthouse, Manafort attorney Kevin Downing said that his client's decision was made in the interest of keeping his family "safe" and noted that it related to Ukrainian lobbying work that "dates back many years".

Mueller told Trump's attorneys in March he was continuing to investigate the Republican president but did not consider him a criminal target "at this point", the Washington Post reported in early April. "It is totally unrelated".

The judge declared a mistrial on the remaining 10 counts, which were dismissed as part of Manafort's plea deal on September 14 in a second case against him in Washington.

"If Manafort is willing to give Mueller information about Trump's contacts with Russian Federation, whether the contacts were direct or indirect, then this really is a disaster for Trump and his associates".

Manafort was going to prison one way or another.
