Losing Speed, Tropical Storm Florence Will Continue Slowly Through The Carolinas

The National Hurricane Center said Florence broke a North Carolina rainfall record that had stood for nearly 20 years: Preliminary reports showed Swansboro got more than 30 inches (75 centimeters) and counting, obliterating the mark set in 1999, when Hurricane Floyd dropped just over 24 inches (60 centimeters) on the state.

Florence was downgraded to a Category 1 storm and further downgraded to a tropical storm on Friday evening. That's enough to fill the Chesapeake Bay or cover the entire state of Texas with almost 4 inches (10 centimetres) of water, he calculated. That means the storm could easily drop 40 inches of rain in some spots.

Atlantic Beach on North Carolina's Outer Banks islands had already received 30 inches of rain, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

According to Doll, many areas in North Carolina are seeing somewhere between 10 and 20 inches of rain.
