The New York Yankees prevented the Boston Red Sox from clinching a third straight American League East title on Tuesday night, but in a unusual twist, they also gave their rivals a little breathing room.

In an interview with the Globe earlier Wednesday, Louie Iacuzzi said he had planned to return the misplaced memento that he says he accidentally stumbled upon Monday morning after spotting an unidentified object in the roadway.

When they unfurled the bag's contents, it was the team's official division championship banner, which will presumably be unveiled at Fenway Park when the Sox return from a six-game road trip on September 24. The return would just have to come at a cost.

"We brought it back over to a safe place to unravel it and see what he had", Iacuzzi said. "We want to return it, 100 percent, but we would like to get something".

Boston can clinch the division championship with a win over the New York Yankees Wednesday night.

"I'm going to give them back the banner, and that's going to be the good luck charm", Iacuzzi said.

Iacuzzi and Amaral ultimately made a decision to bring the banner to Fenway Park.

That plan to leverage the Red Sox for playoff tickets didn't quite work out, though. "Nothing ever happened like this".

Iacuzzi, on the other hand, said he was just trying to "do the right thing". "I ran across like two lanes", Amaral said.

"And in reciprocation, we would like maybe to go to a nice playoff game".
