Sara Cox, 43, who hosts the weekday evening show on Radio 2, was thought to be frontrunner for the breakfast job after being tipped by Evans and station stalwart Jeremy Vine.

Chris Evans announced this month that he was leaving the programme for Virgin Radio, prompting speculation over who would inherit the slot, which reaches more than 9 million listeners a week.

'With regards to reports this morning about who will take over as host of Radio 2's breakfast show, we are considering and talking to a number of people, ' the BBC confirmed in the statement.

"So what do you know of this front page story in The Sun today about Zoe being offered this show come 2019?"

On Monday, the Sun reported that she was in advanced negotiations to take over the programme but no contract had been signed. A contract hasn't been signed and her new pay hasn't yet been agreed.

Despite the fact that Evans is quitting to join a rival, a Radio 2 insider insisted that he was going with the station's blessing, and they were aware of his plans before the announcement was made. But she was our number one choice and has been offered the job.

There has been speculation that BBC chiefs wanted to replace Evans, one of the corporation's highest-paid stars, with a female host following controversy over gender pay inequality. As Chris stated, he wants to seek new challenges after 13 years at the BBC, and we wish him well'.

Earlier in the year, his BBC salary was shown to be between £1.6 million and £1,669,999 as the corporation revealed earnings of its top talent in its annual report.

"If Zoe turns it down it will be offered to Sara, guaranteeing there will be a female hosting our flagship radio show for the first time".

Evans was the BBC's highest earner when the salaries of stars at the corporation were first revealed in 2017, taking home up to £2.2 million. Ball now lives in Brighton with her two children, and is reportedly trying to make arrangements so that she can balance the new role with her family life and commitments.
