The bank's mobile app can not establish a connection, and refers users to an online status page, which fails to open.

"Another customer tweeted: "@BarclaysUK Pensioners are going without food ... some of us can't pay our rent ... because of no access to our Barclays accounts.

Online and telephone banking were hit by the problems, which started on Thursday morning.

A number of business customers had complained that they were unable to organise tomorrow's payments for staff while other users, after the bank had given the all clear, suggested they were still having problems completing their banking tasks.

It comes after City A.M. yesterday reported that Barclays faces a Treasury Select Committee investigation into a failure that saw customers unable to use its online banking services for six hours earlier this week.

However the bank has confirmed that the issue has now been fixed and normal service has resumed.

But one alarmed customer said money had disappeared from his account.

Meanwhile Julia from London told the BBC: "The systems have also gone down inside branches with no transactions possible". The manager was trying to placate customers and couldn't advise when they would be back online.

Another miffed customer took to Twitter to complain that the downtime had caused them to lose £4,600.

She said: "While Cashplus may not be regulated as a bank, it claims to offer "the UK's most seamless banking services experience".

The bank's website was not allowing customers to log in.
