It comes at a time of heightened tension between the west and Russian Federation, with four similar incidents occurring in the past year.

While the Tu-160 planes did not even get close to British airspace, the Royal Air Force (RAF) and UK's Ministry of Defence trumpeted hard about their resounding success. The Russian Blackjacks long-range bombers were not talking to air traffic control, making them a hazard to all other aviation.

French Rafale fighters were also deployed from an airbase in north-eastern France to intercept the aircraft.

In January, Russian bombers over the North Sea were intercepted by RAF Typhoons.

Britain's Minister of State for the Armed Forces, Mark Lancaster, spoke about "an ever more assertive Russia" in a speech in London in July.
