"The owner's trading him", one board of governors attendee told ESPN on Friday.

Butler averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists last season for Minnesota, which made the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

Thibodeau has multiple years left on his contract, so it is unlikely Minnesota lets him go, even if he takes a decidedly anti-trade stance on Butler.

CAATSA sanctions in this context are not meant to undermine the defense capabilities of any particular country. Meanwhile, China has responded strongly and is demanding that the sanctions be withdrawn.

Nevertheless, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor plans to be heavily involved in the decision-making process with president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau and GM Scott Layden, league sources said. Butler's camp has downplayed a fractured locker room as the reason for wanting to leave Minnesota, but the issues between him and the other star players - particularly Andrew Wiggins - on the team were evident after news of Butler's trade request leaked.

Whatever the case may be, it's evident the front office is playing the waiting game with Butler. It's unclear whether Taylor prefers Butler be traded or not. Butler and Wiggins' tension played out on social media in recent days.

Most teams interested in Butler would like to maximize their cap space for 2019 and will balk at taking back Dieng. "Towns" feet dragging reportedly has nothing to do without the amount of money in the extension, but rather is all about whether or not Butler stillw will be with the team, as the forward reportedly "can't co-exist" with Butler and also has an issue with Thibodeau. He can sign a four-year, $141 million deal with a new team.
