Petrol Price Crosses 90 Rupees In Mumbai, Cheapest In Delhi Among Metros

Fuel prices have been witnessing a steep rise since the past few weeks.

The price of petrol touched Rs 90.8 per litre in Mumbai today, recording a hike of 11 paisa since Friday. Petrol in Mumbai is being sold Rs 90.08 per litre and diesel at Rs.78.58 per litre. The Karnataka government also announced on Monday that petrol and diesel would be cheaper by Rs 2 per litre each across the state from Tuesday following the reduction in cess on these fuels.

Petrol price in Kolkata increased by 10 paise per litre from Rs 84.44 per litre on September 23 to Rs 84.54 per litre. Diesel prices too registered a surge in major metros across the country.

While the Opposition has blamed the Union government for not taking enough measures to keep a tab on prices, the latter has maintained that global crude oil prices and other worldwide factors are causing a hike in prices of fuel.

Retail rates are arrived at after adding excise duty, which is charged by the Central government, commission paid to petrol pumps dealers and VAT, charged by the state governments.

Dealer's commission on petrol now is Rs 3.66 per litre and that on diesel is Rs 2.52. Mumbai has the highest sales tax or VAT.
