"New York and Boston-Providence remain well served by Norwegian from Dublin, Shannon and Cork with up to 33 weekly departures, giving customers in Northern Ireland an alternative for booking daily affordable flights to the U.S.", the spokesperson added.

The low-priced airline only launched the routes from Belfast International Airport to the NY and Boston areas last summer.

Flights to both cities from T.F. Green Airport in Providence, R.I., are being eliminated as well.

Norwegian began service at Green at the same time as Stewart past year.

The last flight from Stewart to Edinburgh is scheduled to depart March 29, 2019. They directed customers to its other services from Dublin, Shannon and Cork. Flights to Dublin and Shannon, Ireland and Bergen, Norway will continue.

A Norwegian spokesperson said the move was the result of a comprehensive review of customer demand of the services from Belfast.

The uncertainty about the taxes prompted Norwegian to begin scaling back service at Edinburgh in the spring, when the frequency of flights from Stewart was reduced to four a week from seven. That has "forced us to fully withdraw our transatlantic services to/from Edinburgh as it would not be a sustainable operation", Lindstrom said.

Belfast International said the airline was "moronically channelling much greater levels of Northern Ireland passengers on to Dublin flights".

When Norwegian started flying to Belfast past year, United had just discontinued flights there from Newark.
