The Department of Health in Bay County has confirmed another case of West Nile in a person, bringing the total to five human cases.

The mosquito-borne disease first spread to Canada in 2001 from the USA, and the first human case in the country was reported in Ontario in 2002.

The virus "is a potentially serious illness that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito", the agency said online. There are no vaccines to prevent people from getting West Nile virus and no medications to treat it.
