Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has revealed how Didier Deschamps helped him come out of his shell to the public.

And the former Juventus midfielder, who has scored twice and provided two assists in eight top-flight outings, said he has found it harder to motivate himself, having won the biggest prize of all in Russian Federation. But the same can't be said with Deschamps, who helped the 25-year-old flourish during France's successful World Cup campaign.

"But we like challenges too, we have goals".

"I've never been upset with journalists, it's just that I did not want to talk. I'd like to do that".

And Pogba insists he does not need the captaincy to voice his opinion.

Despite taking on a key leadership role at the World Cup, a growing rift between Pogba and Mourinho saw the France global stripped of the United vice-captaincy last month.

"It really pleased me to hear Adil say that", Pogba told AFP. "You don't have to be captain to speak".

That seemingly led to him being removed as vice-captain of the club and had United not been in such turmoil results-wise, it's likely the furore around the feud between Mourinho and Pogba would have continued. "It's the squad that put me in that position, who gave me the freedom to express myself, and gave me the confidence to".

Pogba has faced criticism for failing to repeat his impressive performances at the World Cup for United, who have slumped early in the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have each won five times in a decade-long stranglehold on the honour with Zinedine Zidane the last French victor after their last World Cup triumph in 1998.

Mourinho said at the time: 'The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain any more but no fall-out, no problems at all.

"I couldn't have done it without them".

"I can't pick one of them, but I sincerely hope it'll be one of those three, or even four because there's also NG (N'Golo Kante)".

The victor, which will be voted for by a global panel of 176 football journalists, will be announced on December 3.
