Pregnancy naturally weakens the body's immune system and as a result flu can cause serious complications for you and your baby. If you are ill with a fever it is recommended that you delay the shot until the fever clears.

Meanwhile, the nasal vaccine should not be given to children, pregnant women, elderly after 50 years old, and asthma patients.

Receiving those vaccinations, health care officials say, is very important when fighting the flu.

"They're anxious about past failures", Johnson said.

Sanford is also holding flu vaccine clinics at locations outside Fargo-Moorhead.

The Health Center encouraged students to receive the flu shot because "besides reducing illness and severity and getting the flu, it helps protect others who haven't been vaccinated or (those in) an at-risk population", Albert said.

"Nursing teams in schools right across the county will be administering the flu vaccine to school pupils, and I hope that as many eligible children as possible take up the vaccine".

Medical professionals agree that if people are sick, they should avoid contact with others.

This year experts came back to consideration of nasal spray vaccine, which they declined during two last years. In addition, the CDC reported the highest ever recorded number of people of all ages being hospitalized.

Health officials recommend that almost all Americans get flu vaccinations to blunt the impact of a disease that annually infects millions.

Last year, the agency said the vaccine was 40 percent effective, meaning it reduced the person's overall risk of getting the illness by that number.

That's not great, Johnson said, but it's better than nothing. The agency recommends that you get a flu shot by the end of October, if possible.

Between prevention, outreach and management, there are many ways to tackle the season that leaves so many people sick.

She experienced that herself, Johnson said. This, of course, can be prevented with a flu vaccine. published in the Journal of Biomedical Sciences, "amongst those aged 18-49 years in the United States, it is estimated that over 300,000 cases per year of influenza can be prevented by vaccination alone". But the symptoms only lasted for a day. Given the long and complicated production process of vaccines, the way they are generally created is based off of public agencies trying to predict which specific strains of the flu will make an appearance in the oncoming flu season. "And they're having a mild season (this year)".
