The fact the 31-year-old Argentinian is the first sports star to have a Cirque show based on his life demonstrates the huge cross-cultural appeal that Messi possesses.

Cirque du Soleil - a French-Canadian group of acrobats and performers known for their spectacular live shows - will produce a show based on the career of the Barcelona superstar.

"The show will celebrate Messi's legacy in Cirque du Soleil's signature way, highlighting the rich culture that makes this sport the most popular worldwide", the company announced on Wednesday.

Cirque du Soleil says it "will leap into the passionate world of football" and "draw inspiration from the incredible talent and accomplishments of the football legend, who embodies the unique spirit and values of his sport".

Cirque du Soleil's Messi show is set to be launched in 2019, with tour dates yet to be confirmed.

Details of where the show will be performed were not immediately available.
