The five-match ODI series starts on 21 October in Guwahati, before the action shifts to Visakhapatnam, Pune, Mumbai, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Mohammed Shami, Khaleel Ahmed, and Shardul Thakur have also been included in the Indian squad. "More than the runs he scored, the composure and the body language he showed are the kind of things we look for from a player", Arun said.

Dinesh Karthik, on the other hand, was axed after a dismal performance in the Asia Cup.

"We all know that Dhoni will play till the World Cup but there is no harm in grooming Pant, who could be a terrific No.6 or 7 batsman, who has the ability to finish games", a senior BCCI official privy to selection matters told PTI. "We have given a few opportunities to Karthik". In the absence of Hardik Pandya, who was stretched off the field after suffering back spasms during a group match against Pakistan in last month's Asia Cup, the onus would be on Pant to provide late-over ballast to India's innings.

However, the primary bone of contention will be whether the selectors and the team management will at least agree on having a cover batsman for Dhoni, whose wicketkeeping remains sharp but batting form has been on the slide.

"The quality of the (SG) balls used to be quite high before and I don't understand the reason why it has gone down because Dukes ball is still good quality, Kookaburra is still good quality", Kohli said ahead of the second Test in Hyderabad.

Hardik Pandya and Kedar Jadhav, who injured themselves during the Asia Cup, have been left out of the squad. Prasad said he would be considered for the remaining ODIs against West Indies. The Windies will also see the return of their regular skipper Jason Holder and Kemar Roach, both of whom are handy pacers for the visiting side as well.

Virat Kohli (Capt), Rohit Sharma (vc), Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu, Manish Pandey, MS Dhoni (wk), Rishabh Pant, R Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Khaleel Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, and KL Rahul.
