The world's longest commercial flight landed in NY from Singapore on Friday, surpassing the previous record by 12 minutes.

Airlines have been asking the plane makers Boeing and Airbus to create planes capable of longer direct routes.

In a live blog for CNN, Quest explained that the flight, which was done by Singapore Airlines, lasted 17 hours and covered more than 16,700 kilometers in the sky.

Lightweight composites including carbon fiber make up the bulk of the A350-900ULR, while new wing tips help reduce drag, Airbus says.

The plane was designed with a two-class layout that features 67 business class and 94 premium economy class seats, so no passengers would be stuck in cramped economy seats during the ultra-long-haul flight.

News 12 New Jersey has been told that prior to take off from Singapore, business class tickets were sold out. At 10,400 miles, it's farther than Qantas Airways' Perth-to-London flight, or Qatar Airways' Doha-to-Auckland flight.
