Comcast Says It's the Largest Provider of 1GB Internet Service

Comcast's residential broadband service is powered by Xfinity xFi, a digital dashboard that personalizes, monitors and manages Wi-Fi connected devices in the home. On Thursday, the company announced that its Xfinity Gigabit internet and Comcast Business Gigabit services are available to almost 58 million homes and businesses across 39 states and Washington, D.C. The company has declared that the deployment, which began in 2016, is the fastest rollout of gigabit speeds to the most homes in the United States.

So-called cord cutters, many of whom continue to rely on broadband providers such as Comcast for internet services, have started defecting to video-streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Youtube TV for television programming. But it is so fast that customers can download high-definition movies in under a minute and connect dozens of devices in a single household without a hiccup. I found a deal of $89.99 a month for the first 12 months (and $104.95 a month thereafter) by checking offers in my part of MA with Comcast's availability checker. "What's partly behind the announcement is reinforcing that now we have one gig deployed across our entire footprint".

The deployment, which kicked off 19 months ago, "represents the fastest rollout of gigabit speeds to the most homes in the country", according to Comcast. But the fiber-to-the-home service costs $300 a month and isn't as widely available as the gigabit cable.

But 1 GB speeds may gain in popularity in the future.

Geekbench listing reveals Nokia 8.1 specs: Snapdragon 710, Android Pie
As for the performance numbers, the HMD Global 8.1 prototype managed a single-core score of 1841 and a multi-core score of 5807. Along with the name of the unannounced handset, the listing reveals some of its specs like chipset, RAM and OS version.

Comcast's announcement on Thursday, which makes it the largest gigabit Internet provider by number of potential homes, comes as telecom carriers Verizon and AT&T are just starting to introduce competing home Internet services with new 5G wireless technology. Comcast's Xfinity Gigabit Internet and Comcast Business Gigabit offerings now cover almost all of the operator's 58 million homes and businesses passed across 39 states and the District of Columbia.

AT&T Fiber added 3 million locations to reach more than 10 million locations across 72 metros nationwide.

For a period of time, it seemed like Google would usher in the era of gigabit internet service on a widespread scale in the US.
