While speaking at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, Haley, who is of Native American descent, joked how the foundation wanted to have an Indian-American speak, but Warren didn't qualify.

"Everyone in Washington called me with advice about this speech - they all said the same thing, 'do not under any circumstances make any jokes about the president, '" Haley said.

Thursday night's speech was the first major public appearance Haley has made since she announced last week her intention to resign from her post at the end of the year.

"Actually, when the president found out that I was Indian-American, he asked if I was from the same tribe as Elizabeth Warren", she added. "I get it", she said.

She also joked about the president's ongoing feud with Senator Elizabeth Warren, who recently released the results of a DNA test that strongly supported the existence of Native American ancestry from six to 10 generations ago.

Haley has often been an unpredictable and independent force in the Trump administration.

The Al Smith Dinner, a white-tie gala featuring prominent politicians, was one of Haley's first appearances since announcing her resignation in an Oval Office meeting with the president October 9.

"Actually the president called me this morning and gave me some really good advice. I get it. You wanted an Indian woman, but Elizabeth Warren failed her DNA test", said Haley, whose parents both emigrated from India.

The former Republican South Carolina governor made the jabs at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, named after the former NY governor, who was the first Catholic to receive a major party nomination for president when he unsuccessfully ran in 1928.

Haley, who recently announced she is leaving her United Nations post at the end of the year, poked fun at the whole situation during her address.

Haley also said Arizona Sen. "Actually I saw Jeff Sessions earlier today, but not in NY, I saw him on LinkedIn looking for a job".

"But I do understand why you invited me", Haley said.

The UNGeneral Assembly had burst into laughter - some said mockingly - when Trump began his speech by claiming his administration was the most successful in United States history.

"In America, our political opponents are not evil".

"We're all happy for you in one way, but we hate to lose [you]".

"In the last two years, I've seen true evil", Ms Haley continued.
