Tom Burgess of the Rabbitohs watches on during the NRL Semi Final match between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the St George Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium on September 15, 2018 in Sydney, Australia.

TV footage appeared to show the Dewsbury-born player gouge an eye of Kiwi captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak during a tackle in the 60th minute of England's 20-14 win.

Burgess' suspension comes despite the incident going unpunished by referee Gerard Sutton at the time during the second-half of the match at Anfield.

Ex-Bradford Bulls forward Burgess, 26, has been hit with a Grade D charge of "behaviour contrary to the true spirit of the game".

George Burgess has learnt his fate after being cited for a "cowardly" act that overshadowed England's rugby league Test win against New Zealand.

Burgess had earlier tweeted accepting the 4 match ban but saying he would never accept he would eye gouge intentionally, as he had too much respect for the players he plays against and with. It was a bit blurry after that.

The suspension means he will miss South's first three games in next year's NRL competition.

"I'm sure he didn't do it on goal him and his brothers are good guys and they've done really good things for the game". Him and his brothers are good guys and they've done really good things for the game. I don't think that's in their kit bag.

"I'm pretty sweet now". I'm sure it was accidental.

Burgess was recalled by England from a two-year absence for the opening autumn global against France and he also played in both games against the Kiwis so far.
