California bar shooting: Ian David Long identified as suspect

At least 12 people have been killed, including a police officer, at a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, California.

They survived the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history just over one year ago. As per latest reports, authorities are saying that the gunman is dead after he injured at least 11 people. "And the gunman started opening fire on the cashiers, the people working the cash register on the front desk".

Helus was not only a 29-year sheriff veteran, but he was also a husband and father. "I love you. I'll talk to you later". "I gotta go on a call, '" Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

After almost three decades policing the area, the veteran was due to retire next year.

He said he has no doubt Helus' tactics at the scene "were sound when he went in".

Helus was married with a grown son and took up fly fishing a few years ago, Buschow said. He leaves a wife and son.

Dean said his officers had several interactions with Long, including an April call to his home.

"He was totally committed", Dean said. He gave his all. He praised the slain officer - a close friend - as a hero: "He went in there to save people and paid the ultimate price". "He did exactly that tonight".

The massacre has rocked the city of Thousand Oaks - known for its sleepy bedroom community and low crime rates.

Two passersby who said they had friends who visited the bar frequently told NBC Los Angeles that they spoke to one man who had managed to escape the bar.

An older brother, Cody Coffman was looking forward to the birth of a younger sister later this month, Jason said.

"We believe he shot himself", said Dean, adding that the shooter's motive was unknown.

Sheriff Dean said the suspect is still unknown and an investigation is ongoing.

Alaina Housley - the niece of actress Tamera Mowry-Housley and husband Adam Housley - also died.

"Our hearts are broken", the couple said in a joint statement.

"We haven't heard back from everyone", she told CNN.

"She's an awesome girl", Adam Housley previously told the Los Angeles Times.

"A lot of people were just running around, young kids, and I just heard the gunshots going even as I was running to the vehicle", Dominguez said while fighting back tears.

Sheriff's Office has confirmed the shooter is among the dead. "From there, the motorcade will travel southbound on Lynn Road to USA 101 northbound to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office in the city of Ventura".
