Mueller is investigating Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 election and any collusion by Trump's campaign. Sessions said in a letter to Trump that he resigned at the president's request.

"We're here because Trump replaced Sessions and installed someone who will do his bidding, who has voiced his hostility to the Bob Mueller investigation", said Mary Melancon, 75, of Tampa.

After that campaign, Whitaker helped start and served for three years as executive director for the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, a self-described "ethics watchdog" that often targets Democratic officials and groups with misconduct investigations and complaints.

Instead, he gave Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein the authority to oversee the probe independently.

"It is imperative that the Administration not impede the Mueller investigation", she tweeted.

The switch, announced on Trump's Twitter feed, provoked consternation across Washington, where politicians from both sides of the aisle have long warned that political interference in Mueller's work can not be tolerated.

Several Republican senators, including the newly elected Mitt Romney, a former presidential candidate, said that the investigation led by Robert Mueller must be allowed to reach its conclusion.

Republican Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said Mueller's probe will continue to its end "because no new attorney general can be can be confirmed who will stop that investigation". He added that it had "been a privilege" to work under Sessions.

Whitaker now becomes Mueller's new boss and judging by past statements he will be sympathetic towards Trump.

Mullen said the three quarterbacks are having a good week. "Understanding the different checks we have in. You're still going to run your offense, but how it applies to that defense".

While Whitaker is now Mueller's ultimate supervisor, it was not immediately clear whether that meant Rosenstein would step aside.

Recent acting and permanent attorneys general have been longtime government lawyers or high-ranking politicians with more experience navigating Washington than Whitaker.

Whitaker has made no public comment since being named, but he has previously shown distinct skepticism about the probe, including calling for its scope to be curtailed.

Dianne Feinstein, also asked for preservation of all records related to the special counsel and the attorney general.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of NY said in a statement that Whitaker should recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe in light of "his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation". He'd attempted a run for Senate in 2014, but lost to Republican Joni Ernst.

It was Clovis, no stranger to TV and radio himself, who encouraged Whitaker to get a regular commentary gig on cable television to get President Donald Trump's attention, according to friends who Whitaker told at the time.

According to sources who spoke with CNN, Mueller's team has already begun writing the final report on the Russian Federation probe.

"Congress must take bipartisan action to protect the integrity of Mueller's investigation", Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House of Representatives, said after Democrats won a House majority in Tuesday's elections.
