Special Counsel Robert Mueller lost crucial protective insulation for his Russian Federation collusion investigation when President Donald Trump fired attorney general Jeff Sessions on Wednesday.

Minutes after Attorney General Jeff Sessions' exit was announced by the White House, Sessions' chief of staff Matt Whitaker was named as acting attorney general.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was forced to resign Wednesday, sparking questions about the future of the Russian Federation investigation.

In recent weeks, Graham has taken his Donald Trump tribute tour across the country ahead of the midterm elections.

"Trump's actions are being compared with those of U.S. President Richard Nixon in one of the most controversial episodes of the Watergate scandal, the Saturday Night Massacre", said organizers. He did not mention that White House chief of staff John Kelly had called Sessions beforehand to ask for his resignation.

Under government ethics regulation, federal employees are required to recuse themselves from matters where their impartiality could reasonably be questioned. "There's no collusion", Trump said Wednesday.

"We have reached an fantastic level of productivity and sophistication", he said.

Republican Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said Mueller's probe will continue to its end "because no new attorney general can be can be confirmed who will stop that investigation".

Mueller's team and Democrats in Congress can fight back. To dismiss a special counsel, the President has to order the attorney-general or, in the case of a recusal, the deputy attorney-general, to carry it out.

Ex-Bradford Bulls forward Burgess, 26, has been hit with a Grade D charge of "behaviour contrary to the true spirit of the game". I'm a tough boy, I'm an adult, I'm a man so I can take those kinds of things but what I can't take is a loss".

The investigation has produced 32 criminal charges and guilty pleas from four former Trump aides. Previously he was a conservative legal commentator who was critical of the scope of Mueller's probe.

The special counsel has also been investigating whether Mr Comey's firing amounted to obstruction of justice.

There have been rumors that Graham was being considered for the attorney general job. The law was meant to address vacancies created by deaths or resignations, but it is not clear it also applies to those created by firings.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham started the Christie speculation when she floated him as a Sessions replacement during her show on Wednesday night, just hours after Sessions was forced to resign.

"Dear Mr President, at your request I am submitting my resignation", Mr Sessions said in his letter.

The possibility that Sessions was sacked could open Whitaker's appointment to court challenge by a range of people, including Mueller, impacted by his actions.

"Interference with the special counsel's investigation would cause a constitutional crisis and undermine the rule of law".

How could Whitaker impede Mueller without firing him?

In that scenario, Mueller's budget could be reduced "so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt", Whitaker said during an interview with CNN in July 2017 before he joined the Justice Department.
