On Wednesday night, in Thousand Oaks, California, as gunman Ian Long killed 12 people at the Borderline Bar and Grill, Orfanos was not so fortunate.

Dean said the slain deputy was on the phone with his wife before telling her he had to go respond to a scene.

The Los Angeles Times quoted a law enforcement official as saying that at least 30 shots were fired inside the bar. "He stepped inside. It appears he turned to the right and shot several of the other security and other employees there. then began opening fire inside the nightclub", Dean said. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The deadliest mass shooting of the year took place in February, when 17 students and faculty members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., lost their lives when a former student, identified as Nikolas Cruz, opened fire.

That, in turn, closely followed the series of pipe bombs mailed to critics of President Donald Trump.

When the gunshots paused, Wennerstorm said he knew the shooter must be reloading, and he didn't waste the moment.

"It's a horrific scene in there", Dean said at a news conference early Thursday in the parking lot of the Borderline Bar & Grill.

Ventura County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran, was killed inside. They went through windows.

Thousands of mourners lined US Highway 101 on Thursday morning to watch as a hearse carrying Helus' body traveled from a hospital in Thousand Oaks to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office.

By the time officers entered the bar again, the gunfire had stopped, according to the sheriff.

Nineteen-year-old Cole Knapp was inside Borderline at the time of the shooting. Their ages range from 18 to 33 - a reflection of the crowd drawn to the "College Country Night" at the bar.

The family is expected to return to the Himalayan kingdom, one of the world's poorest nations, after the twins have recovered. If so it would also be divided, he said, and "our challenge will be to reconstruct their abdominal walls to close it over".

The bar is also close to several other universities, including California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, Pepperdine in Malibu and Moorpark College in Moorpark.

A witness to the shootings, Taylor Von Molt, 21, who said she was a promotor at the bar, said the gunman wore a black mask with a bandana covering the bottom of his face, and a black hoodie.

The married father-of-one died of gunshot wounds as he moved in to try to stop the killing spree. Then he said he saw the gunman, wearing a small black head covering and black hoodie.

"Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with the people that it happened to", defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said. "I ran to the nearest exit and tripped and fell on the way and people kept running on top of me".

Multiple people were seen being led out of the bar by deputies.

"Here are my words: I want gun control", said Susan Schmidt-Orfanos, her voice shaking with grief and rage.

"We do not know how many rounds were in the weapon", he said.

"I screamed to him, 'There's a shooter in there!' He was kind of in disbelief, then saw that I was serious".

"He loved spending time with his son", Buschow told CNN.

"It makes me think about going out now", King said. "I was across the room behind a pool table hiding underneath with my friends".

Located about 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, Thousand Oaks occupies about 55 square miles of rolling hills on the opposite side of the Santa Monica Mountains from Malibu, including more than 15,000 acres of publicly owned parks and open space. A crisis intervention specialist was called to his house and talked to him, but left without taking him into custody, Dean said.
