9 killed in California wildfire as second blaze forces Malibu evacuation

Only a day after it began, the fire near the town of Paradise had grown to almost 110 square miles (285 square kilometers), and investigators found five people dead in vehicles that were torched by the flames. By nightfall, the fire had expanded in size to 70,000 acres, and was just 5 percent contained.

Residents described fleeing their homes and then getting stuck on gridlocked roads as flames approached, sparking explosions and toppling utility poles.

The remains of five of the victims were discovered in or near burned out cars, three outside residences and one inside a home, Honea said.

Fire officials have issued evacuation notices for parts of Chico, a town of 93,000 people north of Sacramento.

At a briefing Friday, the California Office of Emergency Services announced that 52,000 people have been evacuated.

At least nine people have died in what has been called California's most 'destructive fire in a century'.

Acting California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the area and requested a federal emergency declaration, saying that high winds and dry brush presented ongoing danger.

At the hospital with the stranded patients, some buildings caught fire and were damaged, but the main facility, Adventist Health Feather River Hospital, was not, spokesperson Jill Kinney said.

At least five deaths have been reported and as many as 2,000 structures lost in the Paradise area. "And it moved very, very quickly from a rather remote area to populated areas". "We had to ride through flames to get here", he said from the side of a road west of Paradise. "All of it is engulfed in flames right now".

Meanwhile, another wildfire in southern California was threatening 75,000 homes and more than 200,000 people were under mandatory evacuation early on Saturday.

Some 95,000 residents have been evacuated in Ventura County alone, the county's fire department said on Twitter on Friday night.

There was no estimated time to contain the fire, but officials said they would hold a daily news conference from the same location and time if conditions permit, until the fire is out.

It easily jumped eight-lane Highway 101 and rambled over the Santa Monica Mountains to posh Malibu, where it torched homes and cars.

Authorities said four people had been killed inside their cars, four more outside either cars or homes and one person was killed inside a home.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, who lives just north of coastal Malibu in Calabasas, revealed on Instagram that she was forced to flee her home. The Hill Fire caused an evacuation of Cal State University-Channel Islands and about 1,000 homes.

"Had he not put out that fire, I would not have made it to the vehicle", she said.
