The shooting at the Western-style bar left 12 people dead, and authorities said they believe the gunman, US Marines veteran Ian David Long, 28, took his life and was dead when officers finally made entry into the bar.

Jason Coffman holds up his phone, showing a photo his 22-year-old son Cody, who died after a gunman opened fire on a bar in Thousand Oaks and killed 12 people on November 7, 2018.

But neighbors reported hearing frequent loud fights between Ian David Long and his mother, one of them so extreme they called police in April, and authorities at the time anxious that the 28-year-old Afghanistan war veteran might have post-traumatic stress disorder.

The gunman entered the California bar dressed in black and armed with a Glock 21.45-caliber handgun, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Witnesses said he wore something like a ski mask as he opened fire in the packed club at around 11.20pm on Wednesday evening.

A mother whose son survived the Las Vegas massacre only to be shot dead in a California bar has demanded gun control instead of prayers.

"I already didn't wish it on anybody to begin with for the first time, " Kelly stated when asked about the two shootings. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill called for stricter gun control. She was an honors student in high school and played soccer and tennis.

Earlier in May, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his strong support for gun rights during a speech in the city of Dallas, Texas.

"He gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero", Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters, briefly choking back tears, at a press conference.

The attack is the latest chapter in America's epidemic of gun violence.

For one thing, with the vast and growing gap between liberals and conservatives, and Democrats and Republicans, gun control has become an increasingly partisan issue, with Republicans more uniformly opposed.
