Destiny 2: Forsaken hasn't met Activision's sales expectations

These reports come from Activision's latest earnings call, though it's worth mentioning the Destiny franchise grew quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year for the period of September 30.

Players will be able to download the base version of the game, giving them the original eight-hour campaign and a level of 20.

"We have not yet seen the full core re-engage in Destiny, which has kind of led to the underperformance against expectations to date". He says that although players think they're staying dormant but they're "hoping now is the time to work and bring players back in".

Essentially, Activision Blizzard sees the path to making money from "Destiny 2" as a constant drip feed of payments from active players in the game either for cosmetic items or for the expansion packs. It's the same approach, to some degree, used by massive moneymakers like "Fortnite", which earns nearly all of its money from in-game purchases.

As a game, Destiny 2 is better than ever thanks to sweeping changes that were introduced in the Forsaken expansion.

It's an odd statement from Activision, seeing as how Destiny 2's community is stronger than ever and filled with plenty of veteran players now.

Those who are playing Destiny 2 right now are "deeply engaged" with the game, but Johnson said Activision will be focusing now on trying to get lapsed players to come back and draw in new ones.

It could also be a sign of Activision not being happy with Destiny 2's current microtransaction services, which are surprisingly minimal and pretty much fully constrained to a single vendor in the game.
