Now, however, the Munich-based automaker has released more details about the new M340i derivative ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of November.

Just like Mercedes-AMG is using its lower-tier models like the C43 to bridge the gap below the hooligan-spec variants, BMW's M Performance models are fulfilling a similar role within the Bavarian line-up and the new M340i xDrive is a natural rival to that aforementioned C43.

This is the seventh-generation 3-Series, on sale next summer.

The latest 3 Series is slightly longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor, by 2.9-, 0.6-, and 0.5-inches, respectively, and a 1.6-inch longer wheelbase, but BMW promises the overall athletic character of the sedan is not affected.

The power plant developed for the BMW M340i xDrive Sedan raises the vehicle's characteristics in areas of performance, response, revving power, running smoothness and efficiency, so typical of BMW straight six-cylinder engines, to a new level. There's also a new compact steel exhaust manifold and reduced mass moment of inertia to help the blower spin up faster.

United Kingdom police arrest David Schwimmer look-alike for shoplifting
On Tuesday, Lancashire Police posted an update on the investigation into the alleged theft in the resort on September 20. The force announced Monday's arrest on Twitter, thanking Schwimmer for his support.

Compared to the older M340i, the new engine produces 45bhp and 50Nm more output enabling a 0-100kmph time of just 4.4seconds (0.5 seconds quicker than before). The M Sport differential is electronically controlled with a fully variable rear-locking function. The suspension geometry differs from other cars in the range, and if you want to improve the handling further, there's the option of fancy adaptive dampers. Standard 18-inch M light alloy wheels are combined with mixed tyres.

As you can see, the M340i has also been visually upgraded both inside and out. Unique design elements include the BMW kidney grille boasting a mesh design, the rear spoiler in body colour and trapezoidal exhaust tailpipe trims.

Over at the back, a diffuser has been carried over, but it's paired to the typical rectangular exhausts of an M Performance auto. The cabin too gets a lot of M340i logos apart from Sensatec/Alcantara upholstery.

Following its debut at the LA Motor Show, the M340i will only go on sale in the worldwide market by July 2019.
