Jeff Rohrer is about to become the first known former or current National Football League player to be part of a same-sex marriage.

"I've given at least five people heart attacks with this news", Rohrer told the New York Times.

"I'm sure there's going to be some people out there who have a negative reaction to this", Rohrer said, according to the Times, "and I'm fine with it".

The 59-year-old retired Dallas Cowboys player came out as gay in an interview with The New York Times on Wednesday (November 14) introducing 36-year-old Ross as his partner, soon-to-be husband.

Rohrer, a Yale graduate who played with the Cowboys from 1982-89, did not come out until 2015, after he had met Ross at a West Hollywood bar. At the time, the former linebacker "was completely in the closet".

Rohrer said most of his friends were happy and supportive when he came out while others were admitted their surprise.

Roy Linwood Clark was born on April 15, 1933 in Meherrin, VA, but his family moved to Washington, D.C. when he was a kid. His father played in a square dance band and took him to free concerts by the National Symphony and by military bands.

Rohrer appeared in 83 games between 1982 and 1987 for the Cowboys over six seasons with the team after being picked in the second round of the 1982 draft. He was the 53rd overall draft pick that year.

"My experience is that people are born gay, and anyone who wants to dispute that I'd be happy to have a conversation with them, including Mike Pence", Rohrer said to Outsports.

Rohrer grew up in Inglewood, California, where he played high school football.

"I'm not sure about the Cowboy leadership, but the team, knowing the guys and especially how they have reacted to me so far, they wouldn't have cared". "But once we started talking, I realized he was".

He now lives in Los Angeles with his fiance, Joshua Ross, celebrity aesthetician and founder of SkinLab.

"So many nights I cried myself to sleep, feeling like I was the Wolfman, or Jekyll and Hyde, or Frankenstein, some kind of monster that only comes out when it's a full moon, always living in the shadows", he told the site. Now, he gets to live the life he always wanted with Ross.
