Iran slams USA for 'cruel' sanctions

In May, Trump announced the USA withdrawal from the agreement, which ensures the re-imposition of Washington's sanctions on Iran, over Tehran's alleged failure to comply with the JCPOA, something denied by Tehran.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, though, has accused the USA of bullying, and says those most likely to be affected by the new measures are ordinary Iranians.

America has chosen the wrong path in sanctioning Iran and has further exposed its true face to the world in doing so, he pointed out. "If they are being honest and they are looking for regional security, this is not the path".

"Today, it is clear to everyone that these wrong and oppressive sanctions will harm the dear and noble people of Iran", Rouhani said.

Iran has said it will stay in it only if the other powers preserve its economic benefits against USA pressure. Two rounds of sanctions have been reintroduced since then, with the large-scale restrictions covering oil exports being slapped on Iran on November 5. Particularly, European diplomats have proposed to set up the so-called Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) facilitating trade between European companies and Iran amid United States sanctions.

Although Pierre-Paul says he wasn't hurt, the lack of communication and transparency obviously bothered him. "I'm bringing the house down", Pierre-Paul told reporters during a Wednesday conference call.

Tehran's energy, shipping and financial sectors have also been targeted.

"The Americans thought they could completely cut Iran's oil exports, but they realized themselves in the days [ahead of the reimposition of the sanctions] that this is neither practical nor possible", he told a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday, referring to the waivers the USA has granted to major buyers of Iranian crude after the sanctions against Tehran snapped back into place on November 5. "The deal with Iran is a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture", Jourova said during a plenary session of the European Parliament on Wednesday.

A defiant Mr Rouhani has launched persistent attacks on Mr Trump since the sanctions were re-imposed, vowing to withstand the US's "cruel" measures.

He added, "They have made themselves more infamous in the world and in front of our people".

His US administration wants Iran to halt development of ballistic missiles and its support for forces in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.
