Los Angeles police said Avenatti was being held on bail of $US50,000.

TMZ first reported the arrest.

The charges arose from an alleged Tuesday incident, prompting authorities to respond and take a report, an unidentified law enforcement official told The Associated Press. He told reporters waiting outside the station, "I have never struck a woman".

TMZ reported that the two had been sharing an apartment, but Avenatti had kicked the woman out after a break-up.

We can probably say definitively this is the end of Avenatti's political aspirations. Avenatti said at the time that the referral was "baseless". It is not yet clear who filed the report against Avenatti. Avenatti and his wife filed for divorce in 2017.

Avenatti's clients have included Julie Swetnick, who accused Brett Kavanaugh of aggressive sexual behaviour before his confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court.

She was on the sidewalk with sunglasses covering her eyes, and screaming "I can't believe you did this to me!" into a cellphone.

Mrs. Avenatti also expressed skepticism about the report, saying in a statement through her lawyer that her husband wasn't that kind of man.

Hours after the TMZ story came out, Lisa Storie-Avenatti's attorneys contacted Buzzfeed. "I would never disrespect them by touching a woman inappropriately or striking a woman".

'Further, she was not at Mr. Avenatti's apartment on the date that this alleged incident occurred.

After she was escorted upstairs by security, Avenatti arrived and tried to get into the building - but was denied access to the elevator by security.
