It tells the story of Sir Elton's career tracing it back through the decades through stadium tours and private jets before going back to him playing the piano in a pub and performing in a school recital.

The advert is titled "The Boy & The Piano" and chronicles Elton's life from childhood where he actually gets his very first piano all the way to the present day. "I think emotionally he is thinking about the journey he's been on as an artist".

John Lewis declined to comment again today.

"Your Song" was first released almost 50 years ago and proves to be a timeless classic in the heartwarming Christmas advert that aims to spread the message that 'Sometimes a gift isn't just a gift".

The ad will first air on TV this evening at 9.15pm on ITV during Dark Heart. "It could nearly be anyone".

Elton John said: "The John Lewis Christmas campaign has so many warm memories for me and my family".

Rumours around the festive campaign are rife, with Radio X presenter Chris Moyles last week creating a spoof ad featuring the John song Rocket Man.

The shop, along with 14 further shops across the United Kingdom, will also have a Yamaha piano for customers to play.

John Lewis have made steps to launch their Christmas advert campaign, recently changing their name to just "John" at their flagship Oxford Street store in London. However, the retailer says that figure is "wildly inaccurate" and that spend on the ad is broadly similar to previous years.

And others pointed out that Elton John also has a biopic Rocketman coming out in May 2019, and that this advert is surely the ultimate promotional opportunity.
