The midfielder has picked up a knee injury that has ruled him out of their Nations League double header with Albania and Israel.

The 26-year-old, capped twice, was selected on Sunday evening following a spate of call-offs.

"That's unfortunate, with Ryan getting back into the Rangers team and obviously he's got something to offer us as well, in different positions".

Defender David Bates, 22, who moved to Hamburg from Rangers in the summer, has been called up to the senior set-up for the first time following the withdrawal of Blackburn Rovers' Charlie Mulgrew and Kilmarnock full-back Stephen O'Donnell through respective rib and hamstring injuries.

The Scots were already without strikers, Steven Naismith and Leigh Griffiths, with Tom Cairney not selected as he worked to regain match fitness after a lay-off.

"We have the nucleus here and that's important", said McLeish.

Scotland are scheduled to play Albania on Saturday followed by yet another Group C1 game against Israel the following Tuesday.

"We definitely have a good enough squad to carry us through".

If it seems like a typically Scottish problem to have the two best outfield players vying for the same berth, the pair are at least fit and available, which is more that can be said for any other department.

Israel now top Group C1 on six points after three games, while Scotland sit in second on three points with a game in hand.
