Burger King offer Whoppers for a penny only at McDonald's

The chain targeted its rival McDonald's with the deal by declaring it was 'turning more than 14,000 McDonald's into Burger King restaurants'.

For eight days, you can get a Burger King Whopper for only a penny.

Watch the promotional video in which poor McDonald's drive-thru workers have to contend with customers asking for the Whopper sandwich.

The social media account for the U.S. snack Pop Tarts replied: "I appreciate your savagery these days".

The cheeky promotion seemed to be working last night as customers revealed they were taking advantage of the penny Whopper deal.

One person, Alex Shaw, tweeted in response: "Too bad I can't use it because your app won't connect to the internet".

Burger King's app can be downloaded for Android or iOS here. "So we got burgers at McDonald's since we were already there!"

The "Whopper Detour" works when someone goes into a geofenced area around McDonald's, prompting the app to unlock the promotion.

'Once the [one-cent] Whopper sandwich order is placed, the user will be "detoured" away from McDonald's, as the app navigates them to the nearest Burger King restaurant for pick up'.
