Amid all the swirling fallout from the Newlands scandal, the question is hovering: can the Australian team win without resorting to the sort of behaviour that led to a widespread public backlash?

Australia scored at just 2.17 runs per over as they notched just 191 runs on a slow day of cricket in which survival was the key - a point which Australian spin king Shane Warne zeroed in on, accusing them of lacking intent.

"You love seeing that passion in sport, don't you?" said Langer.

Sixteen overs were lost on day three after the rain delays.

The wily spinner extracted enough turn and bounce from the Adelaide pitch to create doubts in the Australian camp, and thanks to poor shot selection by some of the home batsmen that the second session yielded just 60 runs at around 2 runs per over. "I think Travis (Head) did it really well, I think Marcus (Harris) did it well in his first Test match". I thought Ashwin bowled really well, mixed up his pace a lot, bowled a few different variations with side spin and over spin. Watching good spells of old bowlers, what they have done over here, how to get wickets.

"One thing I learned from Allan Border 25 years ago is there's a lot of time in Test cricket, you have to be patient". I try to ask questions to players who have played here before, or wherever they have played.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli might not have enjoyed a good outing with the bat in the first innings, but he enjoyed his heart out while taking the field on Day 3 when the hosts were struggling to get runs on board. I think we really bottled them up under pressure and got the wickets. "Particularly in a long series like this we've got to wear down the opponent, so we probably missed an opportunity to do that".
