On Williams' last appearance at the Australian Open in 2017, she beat sister Venus in the final to lift the trophy for a seventh time, a feat all the more remarkable given Serena was eight weeks pregnant at the time.

"It's always special to see our defending champions - Caroline (Wozniacki) had her first Grand Slam win here this year, so will be keen to start 2019 on a high", said tournament organiser Craig Tiley.

There were suggestions the 37-year-old could walk away from the sport, such was her disillusion at the time, but the Australian Open in Melbourne will mark her return to the Major scene.

The loss to Osaka was marred by an exchange between the veteran and umpire Carlos Ramos, it was the last time Williams took to the court for a competitive match.

Williams is scheduled to play an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi in the final week of the year before heading to Australia to warm-up for her assault on the Melbourne Park title at the Hopman Cup in Perth.

Natural gas prices have stayed relatively low since domestic natural gas production began to grow in 2007. And more coal-fired plants are expected to retire in 2018, which will further reduce coal consumption.

The former world number one has not featured on the WTA Tour since the US Open - when she was beaten in the final by Naomi Osaka.

A 23-time Grand Slam victor, Williams is no stranger to the Australian Open. Having turned professional in 1995, the American is credited with revolutionising the women's game with her powerful, aggressive style of play.

Her participation at the Jan 14-27 Grand Slam was announced by tournament officials yesterday.

Andy Murray will be included in the men's draw alongside Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

The 37-year-old tennis star, who is now ranked No. 16 among women, was named one of the top 102 in her sport and has since committed to competing in January's Melbourne event, the first of four annual Grand Slam tourneys.
